Stories from America's Death Row
Director and presenting partner
Chesney Snow directed a staged reading of Lynden Harris's COUNT: Stories from America's Death Row at McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton. The June 17, 2025 presentation brought six actors and music by A.J. Khaw into a public encounter with stories gathered from men on death row.

The work
Stories behind the sentence
COUNT follows six men through a day on death row. Its fictional characters carry stories drawn from years of conversations and writing with incarcerated men, including men sentenced as children to life without parole. The play asks what it means to build a life under the prospect of scheduled death.
Written by Lynden Harris and developed through Hidden Voices, the work makes room for histories of violence, racism, poverty, and mental illness alongside humor, relationships, and love.
The work
Directing a public conversation
Snow partnered with the Center for Barth Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary to bring the reading to McCarter's Berlind Rehearsal Room. A.J. Khaw served as assistant director and created music for the presentation.
Performances took place at 3 and 7 p.m. on June 17, 2025. A panel conversation followed the evening reading, extending the encounter between the play and its audience.

Theater within a wider inquiry
The reading formed part of the 2025 Karl Barth Conference, The Incarcerated God: Thinking with and Beyond Barth on the Prison System. Open to the wider Princeton community, it placed theatrical storytelling alongside discussions of incarceration, justice, and theology.
